Hi Friends
As my second year at community college begins, it is time to decide what colleges to apply to and where I will be going. Since this will be my second time applying to schools, I have learned a few things in the process. Where you want to go is not necessarily where you are meant to be. I was so sure I wanted to go to the University of San Francisco and when I got in after being on the waiting list I was beyond thrilled. But then when I went to visit the school, I realized it was not for me. I also have friends who did not get into their top choice school, but fell in love with the school they ended up at. Then I had friends who did get into their top choice, and could not be happier. It is safe to say, you end up where you are meant to be, so stressing out will not get you anywhere. Apply to schools out of your comfort zone; I only applied to schools in California, which limited my options. This time around I am applying to ten schools, six of which are out of state. This is the only time in your entire life where you can live in another place and still live off your parents money. Take the opportunity to live somewhere different than what you are used to. Hey, you may even like it and never come back. Lastly, reach for schools you don’t think you have a chance in hell of getting into, because you never know. My guidance counselor told me all the schools that were out of my reach, and I applied anyways and got into one. Of course, apply to a few schools you know you will get into, but do not be afraid to take a chance.
Applying to college, is one of the scariest things teens go through; there is the fear of rejection from a school you thought was the one, not getting enough financial aid, or realizing it just was not meant to be. You are forced to make a decision at a very young age as to where you are going to spend the next four years, and what you are going to do for the rest of your life. Its not easy putting your entire high school career onto paper and hoping that someone reading it is going to think you are extraordinary. Pick schools you love, have lots of options, reach for schools you want, and do not worry. Whether you get there now or in ten years, you will end up where you are supposed to be.
